The beautiful Turks and
Caicos Islands are located in the British West Indies 575 miles
southeast of Miami. Covering 193 square miles of the Atlantic
ocean, the Turks and Caicos Islands have one of the longest coral
reefs in the world.
One of the most valuable
possessions of the islands are the white sandy beaches, which cover 230 miles and are complimented
by crystal clear waters. The
islands are relatively flat but depending on the island, the terrain can
vary from sand dunes to lush green vegetation. There are eight major
islands: Providenciales, North Caicos, Middle Caicos, West Caicos, East
Caicos, South Caicos, Grand Turk and Salt Cay. The people
on the islands are known for their friendliness.
The English speaking
population of approximately 15,000 is dispersed over 6 of the main
islands.
East Caicos and West Caicos are uninhabited.
The native people are descendants from African slaves who were
originally brought over to grow cotton on the island of Providenciales.
The natives are very kind and friendly and are also deeply religious.
The "expat" community of British, Americans, French, Canadians
and Scandinavians give the islands an European feel. The people of the
islands have a very relaxed attitude that helps to create a perfect
environment for you to unwind.
The Tourism industry gives
the Turks
and Caicos its main revenue. In addition the islands are a
major offshore financial center. There is a small traditional fishing
industry that continues throughout the Turks and Caicos. On the islands of
Providenciales and Grand Turk you will find International style hotel
accommodations. Each resort has its own unique set up and surroundings.
At most restaurants, you will find native dishes offered along with international
cuisine. More casual and serene accommodations can be found on the other islands
and smaller cays.
